Safe, Clinical Microsuction in Loudwater
Ear wax removal by microsuction, the gold standard method, performed by a qualified audiologist in our purpose-built clinic in High Wycombe.
How Microsuction Works
Microsuction is a safe, quick, and effective method of ear wax removal. Here is what to expect during your appointment.
Otoscopic Examination
We begin with a thorough examination of your ear canal and eardrum using a clinical otoscope. This allows us to assess the type, position, and quantity of wax, and to check for any underlying conditions.
Clinical Microsuction
Using a medical-grade suction device and operating microscope or loupes, we gently remove the wax under direct vision. The procedure is precise, controlled, and typically takes 15–20 minutes for both ears.
Post-Procedure Check
After removal, we re-examine your ear canals to confirm they are clear and healthy. If we identify any concerns, such as infection or perforation, we will advise on the appropriate next steps.
Microsuction vs Traditional Syringing
Not all ear wax removal methods are equal. Here is why we use microsuction exclusively.
Microsuction
- Performed under direct vision, the clinician can see exactly what they are doing
- No water introduced into the ear canal
- Safe for perforated eardrums and grommets
- Minimal risk of infection
- Precise and controlled, only wax is removed
- Usually no pre-treatment ear drops required
Traditional Syringing
- Performed blind, water is pushed into the ear without visual guidance
- Water can become trapped behind wax, causing infection
- Not suitable for perforated eardrums
- Higher risk of ear canal trauma
- Less precise, relies on water pressure
- Usually requires days of ear drops beforehand

Always Performed by a Qualified Audiologist
At Buckinghamshire Hearing, ear wax removal is always performed by a fully qualified, HCPC registered audiologist, never a healthcare assistant or technician. This means the person treating you has the clinical training to identify and manage any complications, and to spot conditions that may require medical referral.
Many high-street providers use minimally trained staff for wax removal. We believe your ears deserve the same standard of care as any other clinical procedure.

Ear Wax Removal FAQs
Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?
In most cases, no. Microsuction can remove wax effectively without pre-treatment. However, if you have very hard or impacted wax, we may recommend using olive oil drops for 2–3 days beforehand. We will advise you when you book.
Is microsuction painful?
Microsuction is generally comfortable. You will hear a suction noise which some people find unusual, but the procedure itself is not painful. If you experience any discomfort, the clinician will stop and adjust their approach.
How long does the appointment take?
A typical ear wax removal appointment takes 20 to 30 minutes, including the initial examination, the procedure itself, and the post-procedure check. Both ears are treated in a single visit.
How often should I have my ears cleaned?
This varies from person to person. Some people produce very little wax, while others need regular removal every 6–12 months. We will advise you on the best schedule based on your individual wax production.
Can ear wax cause hearing loss?
Yes. A build-up of ear wax is one of the most common causes of temporary hearing loss. It can also cause tinnitus, earache, a feeling of fullness, and dizziness. Removal often results in an immediate improvement in hearing.
How much does ear wax removal cost?
Ear wax removal at Buckinghamshire Hearing is a flat fee of £70, whether one or both ears require treatment. If no wax is found during your appointment, we charge a reduced rate of £35 for the consultation and clinical examination.
